GIS technology and spatial analysis in coastal zone management

چکیده
This paper reviews methods and tools of spatial analysis, their integration and application to coastal zone management. Following a definition of the coastal zone and a short description of its peculiarities and unique management problems, the paper first describes the major tools for spatial analysis, and in particular, GIS and remote sensing, spatially distributed simulation modeling and optimization, and expert systems, as well as their integration in information and decision support systems. This is followed by a short review of the main paradigms of spatial analysis such as environmental impact analysis, risk assessment, and policy analysis, and specific problems such as zoning and site selection. Special emphasis is given to the issues of industrial development in coastal zone management. Examples from the literature are used to illustrate concepts and trends, and the discussion addresses the role of information technology in spatial analysis and its application to coastal zone management in particular.

Spatio-temporal monitoring of evolving topography using LIDAR, Real Time Kinematic GPS and sonar data
Sustainable management of highly dynamic coastal topography with fast moving sand dunes, eroding shoreline and anthropogenic changes to bathymetry and beaches represent significant challenges for coastal management. Modern mapping technologies bring capabilities to monitor this dynamic environment with unprecedented spatial and temporal detail. The general research strategy for coastal areas [1...
متن کاملA Dynamic GIS as an Efficient Tool for Integrated Coastal Zone Management
This contribution addresses both the role of geographical information in participatory research of coastal zones, and its potential to bridge the gap between research and coastal zone management. Over a one year period, heterogeneous data (spatial, temporal, qualitative and quantitative) were obtained which included the process of interviews, storing in a spatio-temporal database. The GIS (Geog...

Coastal mapping and shoreline change detection are critical to many applications, including navigation, coastal zone management, coastal environmental protection, and sustainable development. Field surveying and on-site investigation become inevitable to ensure the quality of coastal decision making. To provide innovative tools for governmental agencies to increase efficiency and reduce operati...
متن کاملSpatial Information for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (iczm) an Example from the Artificial Entrance Channel of the Gippsland Lakes, Australia
Since 1889, an artificial entrance channel, cut through the swash aligned Holocene sandy outer barrier system known as the Ninety Mile Beach, has provided shipping access between the Gippsland Lakes and Bass Strait. From digital spatial data analysis using GIS-built versions of the hydrographic chart archive (spanning the years 1889-2005) accumulated by port authorities, both visual and net vol...
